Welcome to The Reel Life: Thoughts from a Film Lover, and this, my first film blog post ever! If you’re reading this hopefully that means you also have an interest in movies and those that make and write about them. Films have been a vital part of my life ever since I first started going to the movies. So I guess that’s where I’ll start.
As far back as I can remember I’ve always wanted to write about the movies. The first movie I remember going to was How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Ron Howard. My babysitter took me to see that movie when I was two or three, and I was so terrified by Jim Carrey that we had to leave the theater. A few years later, in 2005, I was with my dad when he went to see Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith. At the time I had never seen a Star Wars movie, didn’t know a “Jedi” or “the Force” was at all. To be frank I actually fell asleep during the Battle of Coruscant and woke up during the Battle of Utapau. Clearly I wasn’t very enthralled.
The first time I remember being truly involved in a movie was in 2008, again with my dad, when we went to see Iron Man. I hadn’t yet seen The Dark Knight, but I was a huge fan of Marvel Comics and couldn’t wait to see that movie. It did not disappoint. I spent weeks trying to figure out how to make a suit like Tony Stark, only to be discouraged by my lack of an Arc Reactor and billions of dollars in R&D funds. But it was the first time that a movie truly grabbed my imagination and didn’t let go. Since then I’ve remained a fan of the Marvel Film Franchise, but Iron Man you can probably guess is not still my favorite movie.
Since 2008 I have discovered a wide variety of films, filmmakers, and styles that I adore and continue to seek. From The Phantom of the Opera (1925) to Spotlight (2015) I have continued to find films that amaze me and draw me with their magic and their stories. I have discovered favorite directors like David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino, as well as articulate cinematographers like Robert Elswit and Emmanuel Lubezki. Their craft, hard work, and dedication to art inspire me every day and this is why I choose to write and these and others are why I love movies.
It is to that end that I decided to make this blog and I look forward to seeing what happens with it. I’ll write because I enjoy movies and writing about them and I hope that there will be an audience for this sort of thing. So enjoy this site, my posts, and try and check out as many of the movies I talk about as you can. Every movie has something special in it because every movie is made by people to tell their stories and express their thoughts and feelings. Have fun, enjoy, and never stop going to the movies.
